Summer siren…pink-red-wine fusion!

“You look like a summer siren!” exclaimed a work friend as we walked from the office under the blazing sunshine. Tuesday was one of those rare, lovely summers day we haven’t had in a while. It’s on those days I like to dress as bright as I can and take advantage of the sunshine.imageSo a summer siren….huh? Sirens are found in many Greek stories, Homer’s Odyssey for instance. Sirens were beautiful, yet dangerous creatures, their lovely music was said to entice sailors to their doom. imagePhoto:Google Images

According to my friend, my outfit with it’s colour fusion of oranges, pinks, wines and reds was fiercely beautiful and enticing….just like those mythology creatures. As the conversation went on and we strolled through the park, we saw beautiful red flowers and as they complimented my outfit, we thought that this was certainly a photo opportunity!!imageWhen I put on my outfit on that morning, I never thought I will walk through the park under the sun and red flowers. The outfit was my choice and my environment just helped me look like a ‘summer siren’. Sometimes our environment and society can influence how we look but at the end of day we are our own style Picassos!!image

The Lumberjack shirt invasion

My sister is on vacation in Vancouver at the moment. She shared some photos of herself at a Loggers/Lumberjack Festival. This got me very curious. I wanted to find out more so I enquired from ‘Uncle’ Google. Interestingly, these are very popular festivals in a lot of countries. It’s all about log cutting competitions, the history of lumberjacks and other entertaining games.imageWhat caught my eye was the shirts these men wore. Until now, I didn’t know that the scotched shirts were the lumberjack shirts. The shirts were mostly of wine and black shade but have since expanded to include various different colours. A lot of men have a lumberjack shirts in some shade or other.

In recent years and certainly this summer women have raided the lumberjack shirts. I’m one of them and I didn’t even know I bought a logger’s shirt until a close friend complimented my lumberjack look.imageWhat I like about these shirts is the casual and comfort factor. You can dress them in many ways and in whatever way you like. There are lumberjack shirt dresses which you can accessorise with sandals in summer or in winter with tights and boots. Who knew even shirts woren by axeman could be a wardrobe essential for ladies.image

The Wild ’60s Fashion

Fashion evolves! What we are wearing now, the next generation will no doubt view with both awe and dread…..but then that generation’s kids might start rocking our style.

I remember, as a kid, my parents had a small wine-coloured briefcase which they kept for storing different kind of papers but also some very old photos. I recall a photo of my aunt (Mum’s sister) and her friend as girls wearing tight mini dresses, platforms shoes and very big hair (which I found out later were wigs).image(Not my aunt and her friend but the look is close!)

I was shocked…..my aunt wearing a mini-skirt when, I thought, most of the girls back then didn’t wear anything above the knees walking down the street. When I asked my mum how my aunt got away with this, I was told that was the fashion at the time. Yes, it was the 1960s and the mini-skirt and mmini-dress was the most eye-catching garment of the decade…. designed for the skinny female form, ideally. imageNow the 1960s are back on the high streets, in different forms and trends. Although the minis ruled the roost, flares, midis (for the conservative types) and velvet were all part of the 60s trend.imageSometimes, when I buy clothes and wear them, it takes someone to remind me what era I’m rocking. Our clothes are all from past decades, just not of the same quality in most cases. Your mum’s wardrobe might have looked like a fashion nightmare when you were 14 years old but if you visit it now, it’s a haven of vintage, durable fabric and great quality clothes.imageBefore you put away those wonderful clothes, think about how the next generation will appreciate your wardrobe, when it comes back in fashion 50 years from now. Maybe in next few decades kids will be walking around wearing technology-based outfits……..so our outfits will be a little bit unique!image

White – the new black!

Last weekend I attended a christening where 6 babies were being baptised. The babies looked so adorable in their little white outfits. Prior to the christening there was a wedding in the same church and the bride looked stunning. These two occasions were happy new beginnings for all involved and both had one thing in common – they wore white!imageI have blogged about a lot of colours in the last year but never about white. I suppose it’s because it is  a colour I never thought too much about until recently, when I noticed that even my wardrobe’s pallet is displaying a shimmer of white!  We all strive for change in our lives, we want to feel at peace, within and without, and that’s where the colour white can work perfectly. It is said that attraction to white clothes or accessories might be viewed as a wish for new beginnings and renewal or it might even encourage the purification of one’s thoughts and actions –  so, I took this as a sign for me and put it to test….imageAs it’s the summertime, I have decided to wear all white on a few different occasions and I have to admit, I feel very energetic, peaceful and happy.imageWhite is the prettiest colour that can complement any other hue…… so, if you are not all about white then put it to use with darker coloured clothing.image

Cold Summer? How to look cozy and chic!

The weather has been very confusing lately but summer is here at last…well sort of! The challenge for us ladies though is how to dress well for an occasion when the weather is so changeable.

I went to an outdoor house party one summer looking all pretty in light summer-wear but the weather changed unexpectedly. I was so cold that I couldn’t move. I remember asking the host (whom I didn’t know that well) for a jacket. I didn’t care about the colour or size…i was way too cold to be pretty and all I wanted was some warmth! Lesson learnt…so, to avoid the chance of ruining your day/night out because you are too cold, my advice is to dress for the unexpected. Here are some fashion clothing that could be useful:imageBlazers and Cropped Jackets: Blazers are great with whatever outfit you might be wearing. You can dress them up…or down. Try throwing a nice blazer or a smart jacket on top of whatever outfit you’re wearing and you will not only look amazingly stylish but you’ll also be warm.imageScarfs and shawls: You may recall my post about winter blankets, well, they can be quite handy during the ‘Irish summers’ too. Scarfs and shawls are great as accessories, especially when you don’t want to carry a jacket around. Despite being lightweight, they are also useful when temperatures drops.imageCoats and rain jackets: I have to admit there was one day last week it suddenly turned so cold that I had to reach for my tucked away winter coat. Remember, you can always wear your lightweight summer outfit underneath.imageWhatever you decide to wear for the occasion, just make sure that you feel cozy and that it is weather proof!

Food meets fashion…the ideal lunch outfit

I’m usually all about dresses, bags and shoes but a girl has to eat too. You can only look good in your clothes when you’re happy and healthy!

A few weeks ago I went out to this cool brassiere & wine bar for dinner in Dublin 2. It is so funky inside, the decor is warm and the stone walls gives it that wine cellar look. The food is amazing, the staff are welcoming and atmosphere is vibrant. I liked it so much I thought of bringing my friend there for a pre-weekend lunch.imageThe question of the day though was…..what to wear?  Believe me, it’s always a big question for most ladies!

The day before our lunch, myself and Sorcha were exchanging outfit ideas all depending on the weather of course.  There are so many outfits one can wear for lunching out without being over the top, e.g. jeans, blazers, jumpsuits, dresses, shorts etcimageMost restaurants are not overly particular about what people wear but I think it’s nice to dress appropriately when going to a restaurant, no matter the time or occasion. Something formal or smart casual will be ideal.imageI, personally, find skirts and dresses are very safe and comfortable, especially during this summer period. As we were on a work lunch break, we were already in the right outfits…..thanks to the sunny weather.imageWalking back to the office, a lady stopped and complimented us on how beautiful we looked……thus ending our lunch date on a happy note.

Interview dressing that works

Nowadays, the way interviews are being carried out is very different to how they used to be eons ago. Thanks to the digital age, you can now have your interview even while you are on top of Kilimanjaro, provided you have your smartphone, or portable device, with Skype and a strong internet connection. Despite the amazing advantage of not having to be in the same room as your interviewer, you still need to look the part….being clean shaven and smart can make a difference, even on video link.imageThis week, I was sifting through my wardrobe for an interview outfit and discovered that most of my ‘corporate’ outfits were not as colourful as the rest of my wardrobe.

imageIn trying to choose an appropriate outfit, I considered the following interview ‘fashion pros’:

* No matter how toned your arms are, going sleeveless in an interview can be deemed inappropriate, so wear a cardigan or jacket/blazer.
* Dark colours are the safest, for example blacks, navy, grey, browns, etc. Bright colours can come through as loud and too distracting to the interviewer(s).
* If you are not a suit person, wearing a nice ironed shirt and well fitted trousers or nice length skirt is just as good….but gents, please wear a tie!!
* No matter what outfit you chose to wear, be COMFORTABLE in it.imageAs it was a nice summer’s day, I opted for a tailored black and dark teal sleeveless dress with a short jacket to hide my arms. The outfit worked really well because when I took off my jacket right after the interview, I still looked professional!
imageI’ve also worn this brown trousers suit a few times to interviews and meetings alike. It’s classy, well-tailored and very comfortable.
imageNo matter what line of work you’re in, when it comes to interviews, your ‘dress’ can speak volumes. As they say, ‘dress for the job you want, not for the job you have’.

For a rosy summer….Think Pink!

This week I was watching the Audrey Hepburn classic 1957 American musical romantic comedy movie, Funny Face and the overture song ‘Think Pink’ had me all excited about wearing pink . The chorus sings that pink is perfect for everyone and every occasion and…….even shampoo and toothpaste should be pink!imageLittle girls around the world love pink. It is a colour that reflects sweetness, innocence and uncomplicated emotions. Most of us have associated pink with the ‘Barbie’ revolution but now fashion is certainly having a close affection with this colour and it’s creeping into the grown up wardrobes.image.jpegThere are many shades of pink……magenta, hot pink, rose, bubblegum, watermelon, fuscia….to name a few. Whichever pink you pick, it’s guaranteed to make your outfit fizz.

When you shop this summer, and see pink, know that everything is going to be rosy because, according to colour psychology, pink represents compassion, nurturing and love. It also may indicate happiness and good health.

This year pink has been a strong feature on the Fall/Winter 2016-2017 catwalks so it looks like the 1957 Think Pink colour anthem got it right, pink is now the colour to which you gotta switch as it makes your day, makes your night……and it can even make your year.

Wearing confidence is wearing beauty

I was watching Cameron Russel’s talk on TED ….’Looks aren’t Everything’ and it made me think how the world around us has always dictated what’s the acceptable body shape and look for women for centuries.

I’m naturally slim but I grew up envying my voluptuous sisters and friends and there’s a reason why……I grew up in a society that embraces curviness as a sign of beauty. My sisters and most of my African friends have beautifully well formed bodies and they love it! imageBeing skinny was something I had to explain to people all the time……..because to them I was either not eating properly or there was something very wrong with my biological makeup! It didn’t vex me at all because it is  my body and I’m happy and comfortable in it all the time.imageThe silhouette of the “ideal woman” has been ever changing for centuries which means the physical qualities we embrace today were there in yesteryear and will be there for the generations to come. From the 1920s until now, there has been many beauty trends, mostly influenced by fashion, movies, politics and music. The bottom line is no matter what your body shape is, love yourself and be confident in it.

For anyone who has watched the BBC series The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency, you will know how Precious Ramotswe (Jill Scott) was proud, comfortable and assured in her ‘traditionally’ built body and it brought out her beautiful character.imageAs a Mad Men fan, I loved Joan Holloway’s (Christina Hendricks) amazing curvy figure. She is beautiful, classy and confident.imageJust like fashion, or even food, beauty trends are subjective and ever changing but remember confidence is timeless. Go on ……..embrace what your Mama gave you!!image

Step into the blue-Spring must have!

“The blue sky is my first artwork”, were the words French artist Yves Klein said to his friends when asked what course his life should take. A few years later Yves Klein developed his own particular brand of the colour blue called IKB (International Klein Blue).

This spring/summer pantone fashion colour is very blue. There is a wide array of blues on view this season and my favourite is the IKB.

imageA mixture mixture of blues with whites and reds makes it a happier and more colourful Spring. The good news is that the Klein blue works with all skin tones so anyone can rock it. If the outfit is not doing the business, there are always shoes and handbags to help.

imageDon’t feel blue this Spring. Stay calm……. be mesmerising and colourful in whatever hue of blue takes your fancy.
